Obituary for Sheila M. Tyranski

Sheila M. Tyranski
Sheila Murphy Tyranski was born is Cambridge, New York on March 29, 1949 to John and Blanche McCarty Murphy. Sheila passed away on March 13, 2016, at the age of 66, from pneumonia. Growing up in what she considered a “one stoplight town,” Sheila proceeded to graduate from Vasser Hospital School of Nursing in 1969. She worked in the emergency room at Vasser Brothers Hospital until her transition to Duchess County BOCES in 1979. While working full-time, Sheila went to school part-time to earn her Bachelors of Science Degree from Pace University. She met her husband, Patrick, on a cruise ship (she was traveling with her mother at the time). This “love boat” relationship bloomed, and they married in December 1981; thus, enjoying 34 years of marriage. After working in the busy setting of a hospital, Sheila transitioned into the role of a teacher and mentor. She taught in the Adult Day Learner Program, instructing students in nursing assistance and educated students at Mt. Vernon High School. She also acted as Health Director at Iona College and served as a nurse in the Yonkers Public School System. She was a wonderful mother. She served as co-president of the Parent Teacher Association at Traphagen Elementary School in Mt. Vernon, New York. She was honored with the Jenkins Award for her outstanding commitment to early childhood education. As a PTA mom, Sheila was known for hand-sewing her children’s Halloween costumes and dying carnations for the sixth grade graduation. In her retirement, she got to travel. Her favorite means of leisure was aboard cruise ships-a tradition she has instilled in her children. Her retirement also allowed her the opportunity to serve as co-president of the Ladies’ Guild at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle, New York. Sheila always enjoyed leading an active and purposeful life. She is survived by her husband, Patrick; her son, John; her daughter, Kathryn; her son-in-law, Damian; and her granddaughter, Victoria.
